Cape Town winners at 2011 Imvelo Awards

Southern Africa’s responsible tourism awards, the Imvelo Awards, were announced on 9 November 2011, World Responsible Tourism Day. Cape Town-based companies were well represented, comprising 12 of the 38 finalists and winning 6 of 14 awards (with 3 Cape Town finalists also part of a 7th award given to their hotel group and one finalist being highly commended). Special recognition goes to The Backpack & Africa Travel Centre for winning awards in two categories, and to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company for being the overall winner of the 2011 Imvelo Awards.

Imvelo, running for the tenth year, awards tourism businesses that demonstrate sustained responsible practice in their operations in terms of their natural, social and economic environments. Imvelo, which means ‘nature’ in South Africa’s Nguni languages, encourages industry members to accept voluntary guidelines promoting responsible tourism. The awards are in line with the responsible tourism guidelines for the South African hospitality industry and the UN World Tourism Organisation’s code of ethics, and are supported by the Heritage Environmental Rating Programme.
