Every aspect of Hotel Verde is aimed to be as sustainable as possible – literally from below the ground up. Conceptualised and built as a green building, the custom designed systems have proven to efficiently save water and electricity and reduce waste. The multitude of environmental features include a grey water recycling plant, rainwater and subsoil drainage water collection tank, energy generator elevator and gym equipment, green garden roof, wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, bulk guest product dispensers, an eco-pool, on-site beehives and weekly earth hour. Hotel Verde goes to every effort to communicate its commitment to sustainability, and bring every guest, delegate, and supplier into that journey. Employees are bound to contribute to the hotel’s vision through their employment contracts, and assisted to do so through staff involvement programmes, incentives and training to reduce their impacts. The building management system is used to monitor the water, energy and waste footprint of every guest night or delegate day, and the equivalent carbon emissions offset. Guests are rewarded for positive green actions through the Verdino or green coin incentive.
Hotel Verde also cares deeply about the livelihoods and life chances of the people of Cape Town. Quirky graffiti art in the parking basement and mosaic, applique and wire art adorning corridors and walls are all products of collaboration between the property and local learners and artists. Human resources are nurtured through an internship programme and facility tours for learners, focussing on sustainable living and careers in hospitality. Visiting schools are gifted a voucher for fundraising purposes. Hotel Verde tags itself “Africa’s Greenest Hotel”. And has abundant evidence to back this claim.
