Peninsula All-Suite Hotel and Responsible Tourism Pilot

Congratulations to the Peninsula All Suites Hotel with continued monitoring, reporting and RT initiatives.

Energy Efficiency

We recently did a sample suite replacing the existing light bulbs with LED light bulbs measuring the light levels and checking for ambiance.  In November 2012 all the existing light bulbs in the suites, public areas, corridors, offices and back of house areas will be replaced with LED light bulbs.  After extensive testing and consultation, each area will be replaced with the LED light bulb that best suits that particular area.  This will further offset our carbon footprint as well as achieving substantial saving to our electricity bill.  Watch this space!!

Heat Pump Integration

The Peninsula Hotel is still in the process of valuating the feasibility of installing this new heat pump technology as well as looking at other options currently on the market.

Social Development

The Peninsula has been in on going association with the SOS Children’s Village since 2009. SOS Children’s Village was the first Village that took in SOS mothers and children of different races to live together under one roof. Up to eight children share a home with an SOS mother and enjoy the love and security that living as a family brings. ThePeninsulawanted to support a multiracial non governmental NGO for under privileged children that would be an ongoing project in which we could invest both time and resources as well as add value in a team effort.  For these reasons we chose SOS Children’s Village.

It was agreed that in 2012 we would concentrate on upgrading and maintaining the playground, carrying out repair work to the Wendy Houses as well as assisting with maintenance repairs in the village houses.  Every month a team of seven visit the “Village” to do whatever is necessary.  So far this year we have painted the playground equipment bright colours and donated a couple of black bins with “smiley faces” painted on them.  Our gardening service company, Fresh Flower Company, donated four trees in pots with colourful plants planted around the base of each tree and we also donated five wooden picnic benches for the braai area.  Fifty energy saving light bulbs and three first aid boxes were also donated which were some of the items requested on their “Needs List”.

Recently we painted all their garden outdoor lamp posts in a light grey colour and some of our contactors namely ICandi and Salient Aluminium, assisted by donating and installing a partition in the Grade R classroom thus dividing it into two classrooms. The concrete braai areas were cracked and the tiles were broken.  Once again one of our contractors, Smart Renovations, assisted by repairing, retiling and replacing the braai grids.

All staff voluntarily donate R5 every Friday for casual day, the funds from this go towards this project.
